Pet Horoscopes

Who says your pets don’t have personalities? Just like you, your pets also have their own personality traits. No two pets have the same personality. Any pet owner can tell you that! So, the question here is whether these personality traits are influenced by the signs that they were born under.

Logically, that is quite an acceptable idea. After all, animals have been around on this planet for much longer than Man has.

You can search the Internet and find a variety of sites giving you your pet’s horoscope. Pet horoscopes are not a mysterious thing.

So what would most pet horoscopes talk about? And what is the basis of finding out your pet’s sign? Your pet’s sign would be based on his date of birth. That would be the sun sign, of course.

For now, let’s just stick to the sun signs. These pet horoscopes would help you understand your pet better and you would gain a lot of clarity about why they do what they do. This might help you understand your pet so much better, and thus help build a long lasting, companionable relationship with your pet.

If you believe in horoscopes then it makes sense for you to check out pet horoscopes. If the time and place your were born influences your character then the time and place your pet was born could influence his character. Pet horoscopes make sense if the planets can affect and influence the events in your life, why can't the planets affect and influence the events in your pets life? If you believe in astrology as a science and you can make the leap from the heavenly bodies affecting man to the heavenly bodies affecting animals, then pet horoscopes make sense.

Pet horoscopes should be able to help you in the selection of a compatible pet. In humans, certain astrological signs get along better together than certain other combinations of astrological signs so a pet horoscope could tell you whether the pet you are considering buying or adopting will be compatible with you based on your individual astrological signs.

It would be best to consult a pet horoscope before making a commitment to a pet as you both might prove incompatible and a pet horoscope could have warned yo of that possibility. So before going out to look for a pet, consult the pet horoscope to determine the general astrological signs of pets that will be most compatible with you and then when you have found a specific pet that you are interested in, you should consult that pet's individual pet horoscope to determine if that particular pet is right for you. both yours and your pet's happiness depend on your consulting the pet horoscope before a mistake is made.

Once you have your pet, you probably won't want to make any major moves in his life without consulting the pet horoscope. Pet horoscopes can tell you whether it is a good time to travle with your pet and pet horoscopes can help you manage all aspects of your pets life.

Pet Horoscopes – Signs and Traits

Let’s have a look at the 12 Sun Signs and the traits that a pet would have when he is of that sign.

Aries (March 22 to April 21)

An Aries pet would be essentially a loner and have a lot of enthusiasm. He wants what he wants and is not shy about it. He would be prone to hitting his head often. He would also be one to enjoy fighting with other animals or pets. He might have bit the owner a couple of times. He loves to run and is always alert. He has an aggressive and impatient nature and is loud.

Loyalty is his strong point, displays of emotions are not his thing. He loves to sleep and eat and stay indoors. He loves to go outdoors for only short periods of time.

Gemini (May 22 to June 21)

He is absolutely loyal to his owner and his family, and will defend them whenever he can. He has a generous and big heart. He is quite charming and seems to have a lot of energy. It is quite possible that he will go to any lengths to gain attention and adulation from people. He is quite open about his feelings.

A Virgo pet is very neat and clean and finicky about his food. He can be quite the smart thinker. But he gets easily annoyed. He enjoys the good things of life and is overall a very pleasant sort. He may not seem to be particularly loyal and gets along with most everyone. He is also quite lazy and does not like to be alone.

This one is an intense fellow, with deep and piercing eyes. He is usually quite still and seems to be observing and analyzing everything. He can seem to be emotionally distant and moody. He may not get angry, but when he does, it can be quite vicious. He learns things quite fast and appears to have some kind of an inner strength. He can be quite independent. He can also be very manipulative. He can be totally annoyed with the presence of other animals.

He may not often express his feelings and thus may appear quite cold. He is very loyal by nature – but he takes his own time bonding with his owners.

Aquarius (January 22 to February 21)

An Aquarius pet is very independent by nature. It seems as if he has no attention span at all. He is friendly to everyone, but in a very artificial manner. He loves to be outside. He might even appear to be scatter-brained. He is afraid of the dark and likes to be cuddled. He likes to socialize with other people or animals.

Pisces (February 22 to March 21)

A Pisces pet is very gentle in demeanor. It seems to intuitively understand its owner. He is quite affectionate and is quite tolerant of other pets. He is a quiet sort. He likes to hide in secluded corners or under the bed or the furniture. He loves to sleep a lot. He does not seem to get angry at all. He likes to keep warm.

Pet Sitting Service Business

Most everyone has a passion and love for animals and most everyone has some type of animal for a pet. In today's society where two-income families have become the norm and young professionals delaying marriage and/or children, many own pet's and taking better care of them than ever before. This is a great opportunity for you to tap into this growing market and start a pet sitting service business.

Why not take your love for animals and turn it into a profitable business. With over 120 million dogs and cats in the United States there is a huge market for this type of service. This number doesn't include other types of pets such as fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, birds, ferrets, rabbits and other pets that require care and attention.

As a pet sitter you're your own boss. With being a pet sitter comes independence and pride in being your own boss. No time clock to punch; no boss looking over your shoulder. Having a business will not only give you a sense of confidence but the self-satisfaction you'll receive in your abilities to run a business.

Most pet owners will be more than happy to pay for this service if they know their pets are well cared for while they are away.

You can either start out on a part-time basis, full-time basis or only occasionally. With a pet sitting service you can provide them with the best alternative in caring for their pets in their own environment enabling the pet owners to travel and knowing their pets are in good hands. People don't mind paying for a good service that allows them to be worry-free when away from home.

Unlike many other business opportunities, pet sitting can be started with limited cost. It is not necessary to spend a lot in starting a pet sitting service. There's no inventory and a small investment.

Pet ID

Pet identification speaks for your pet when it cannot. Wearing an id tag will increase the chances of your dog or cat being returned to you.

The most typical form of pet id is the simple collar tag. Metal tags last the longest and resist scratching.

This tag is attached to the dog or cat's collar with some kind of hook. The figure -eight is usually a sturdier connection.

This type of pet identification tag needs to be engraved. You can choose to put whatever you want on the tag. At a minimum the tag should include the animal's name and your phone number. If space allows, it is a good idea to provide at least one additional phone number, such as a cell phone, a neighbor or your vet.

City and state are not necessary; usually the animal is lost close to home. A zip code or area code is useful in case the animal gets loose somewhere farther away.

Temporary ids are made from paper or cardboard, which are then laminated or inserted into a plastic holder. These types of id tags are great for when you are traveling with your pet. Attach them to the collar in addition to the regular id. If you want to get really fancy, you can purchase an embroidered collar for your dog or cat in place of the tag. The benefit is that it is unlikely to fall off, unless of course the entire collar is lost.

An even more permanent type of identification is the microchip. Most animal shelters now automatically chip the animals when they are adopted.

The information embedded in the microchip also resides on the providing company's database, and can be accessed from anywhere in the country. The chip can then be traced back to the purchaser of the chip, not necessarily directly to you.

Since the tag cannot be seen or felt, the animal can also wear a tag that tells people it has been chipped. In order to read the microchip, the dog or cat will need to be brought to a police station, vet's office or animal shelter. The firms that provide the chip also provide a recovery service. This is separate from the chip registration. An annual fee is charged. You register your pet with your information. There are also independent companies that provide lost-pet services, using any microchip brand.

World Of Virtual Pets

Virtual pets just like real live pets require feeding, care and love. Otherwise, just like their real counterparts, virtual pets will die. Virtual pets need to eat. Virtual pets need water. Virtual pets like to play. Virtual pets can get diseases. And just like real pets, virtual pets depend on you for most of their needs.

Most people are at least somewhat familiar with the early virtual pets like Tomagotchi and Furbee. These hand held virtual pets were a big sensation when they first became widespread. Many many children adopted these virtual pets and were really caught up in their care. Some schools ha to go so far as banning these virtual pets from school as the teachers felt that they were distracting the students during class. But many students felt that since the very life of their virtual pet was at stake, they should be allowed to bring their virtual pets to school and care for them during class. The handheld virtual pets are still around, but they have been superseded by the online virtual pets.

There are many online websites where you can create or adopt virtual pets. ONline virtual pets can be realistic pet simulations or fantasy characters. But all virtual pets need care and require that, at the very least their basic needs for food, water and shelter be met for them to stay alive.

Online virtual pets can play games and have adventures. These virtual pets usually amass health or happiness points if their owner takes good care of them. At this basic level, it does seem that virtual pets can teach children something about the responsibility of caring for a pet and just might be useful in that respect. A more adult version of virtual pets exists online also. These virtual pet sites are far more sophisticated and require a lot of study in order to participate successfully. These virtual pet sites are like the fantasy sports leagues in that you manage a stable of race horses or a kennel of showdogs. You guide your virtual pets through training and breeding in order to create champions who can win races or shows. You still need to care for the basic needs of these virtual pets and then some. These virtual pet simulations can get pretty involved and be quite time consuming, but if you like virtual pets, you can have a lot of fun.

Having pet seems to be one of the most favorite choice. However, having real pets can be either pleasure or trouble. Kids may not have enough responsibility to take care their real pets and this brings a lot of problems to parents. Therefore, some parents can see the opportunity of having pet toys for their children. Animal dolls or animal toys are also known as virtual pets as so many people love to have in the past. People change to looking for the virtual pets that look as much alike the real pet, particularly for children who love to have their own dogs and cats etc.

Do you like stuffed toys? We’re sure everyone loves furry and warm stuffed animals to cuddle up with. It felt so. Your stuffed animal participated happily in every game you played. Most of us hesitate to have a real pet due to the cost and responsibilities involved. Go for a virtual pet instead. Check out you local shops where so many wonderful animal dolls are waiting to be your pets. Give your children a playmate. Go for one of these amazingly cute animals. All you need to do is load the pet using the secret code we generate for you. Your child could then get online whenever he wishes to play with the pet. You could name the pet what you want. Many of our young (and adult) customers have walked away happily with their new virtual pet. Relive your make-believe adventures all over again with your enthusiastic pet. So ditch all the hesitation and find out all information you need about when you want to have quality and adorable virtual pets.

Electronic Music

Pet Shop Boys are a British synthpop/pop music/electronic music duo, consisting of Neil Tennant who provides main vocals, keyboards and very occasionally guitar, and Chris Lowe on keyboards and occasionally on vocals. The duo write the vast majority of their songs and have also written songs for other artists.

Pet Shop Boys have sold more than 50 million records worldwide. The longevity of their career is generally attributed to their ability to create melodic and interesting pop/dance music. Pet Shop Boys were very successful in the United States in the mid-1980s, with "West End Girls" reaching number one. Their last Top 40 single, "Domino Dancing", reached number 18 on the US pop chart in 1988. Since then, they have continued to enjoy cult and club success in the USA and are the fourth-most successful dance artists ever in the USA Billboard dance charts, behind Madonna, Donna Summer and Janet Jackson with eight Billboard Dance number ones. Pet Shop Boys have undertaken four world tours in 1991, 1999-2000, 2002 and 2006-2007. Pet Shop Boys' most recent studio album, Fundamental, was released on the Parlophone label on 22 May 2006. The album peaked at number five in the UK and in the rest of Europe at number two, marking a strong return to the charts. The album's first single, "I'm with Stupid" was released in the UK on 8 May 2006, reaching number eight in the UK Singles Chart. In December 2006, the duo was nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best Dance Recording ("I'm with Stupid") and Best Electronic/Dance Album (Fundamental).

In July 2007, Pet Shop Boys signed a new deal with Parlophone Records. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe commented: “It’s over 20 years since we originally signed to EMI and we’re very happy to be continuing our relationship with them”. Miles Leonard, Parlophone’s MD says: “What Pet Shop Boys are doing is unique.

Band Dynamic

The dynamic of Pet Shop Boys' image lies in the duo's public personalities — Tennant is perceived as an erudite intellectual, articulate, and verbose in speech; while Lowe, now almost always seen in his trademark attire of hat and sunglasses (since as early as 1985),[1] appears as guarded and terse but nevertheless behaves as casual, flippant and fun-loving. This also formed the foundation of the band's early reputation as being anti-rock music, and more properly aligned with disco and dance music culture.

Image

This band dynamic has played a role in their public image as well. Early in their career, the duo were frequently accused of lacking stage presence, said to be a deliberate reaction to the hyper-cheerful music of the time demonstrated by bands such as Wham!. A typical early performance featured Lowe in the background hitting the occasional note on a Fairlight synthesiser keyboard and Tennant singing, but otherwise passive, in the foreground.

However, when they began touring in 1989, they were heavily influenced by opera and theatre staging. Derek Jarman staged their first tour, making a series of films to be projected behind the costumed singers and dancers. Subsequent tours have used artist Sam Taylor-Wood and architect Zaha Hadid for stage design. Their latest tour, ongoing in 2006 and 2007, was conceived and designed by theatre designer Es Devlin with choreography by Hakeem Onibudo.

Traditionally, Pet Shop Boys have always favoured avant-garde tailored fashions. Tennant has referenced the designers of his suits certain interviews, and Lowe has often sported outfits and glasses made by Issey Miyake, Stüssy and Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 for Adidas. Presentation has always been a major theme for the Pet Shop Boys, and the duo have dramatically "reinvented" their image twice in their career. In 1993, when promoting their Very album, they wore brightly coloured costumes and used state-of-the-art computer technology to place themselves in a modern computer graphic world. In 2006 both Tennant and Lowe were seen on stage and in photographs wearing clothes designed by Hedi Slimane/Dior Homme

Live shows

The duo employ a programmer, Pete Gleadall to oversee the computers (which are all actually running live) and play keyboards, as well as backing singers, which include long time singer Sylvia Mason-James. On using computers and playing live shows, Neil Tennant commented in 1991 that

Chris Lowe also commented in the same interview, (by Chris Heath for the Performance DVD sleeve notes), that

Apart from the guitar and extra keyboards it's all sequenced using MIDI. You set it up and it just plays. The machines are rack mounted and each one plays a different part.

Aesthetics

Photographer Eric Watson helped create the original image of Pet Shop Boys, creating many of their photographs and videos from 1984 to 1991. In design they have primarily worked with Mark Farrow, who designed the cover of their first Parlophone album release in 1986. The collaboration between Mark Farrow and Pet Shop Boys is comparable to the designer-band relationship of Peter Saville and New Order, Anton Corbijn and Depeche Mode, or the epic-length collaboration of Simon Halfon and Paul Weller. In October 2006, they released a 336-page hardcover book entitled Catalogue, showcasing their accomplishments in artwork, design, and of course, music.

Sexuality

Neil Tennant is openly gay, although he did not confirm rumours about his sexuality during the 1980s. Tennant "came out," as it were, in a 1994 interview for Attitude, a UK gay lifestyle magazine. The duo are sometimes incorrectly assumed to be a couple (in the 1990 biography Pet Shop Boys, Literally, Tennant recalls that even their ex-manager, Tom Watkins, was under this impression for a time).

Pet Shop Boys are seen as significant figures in gay culture for such songs as "Can you forgive her?", "It's a sin" (for which gay director Derek Jarman produced the video), "New York City Boy" and their cover of Village People's "Go West". They have written a song about a young male fan spending a night with a rapper, based on Eminem, called "The night I fell in love" and a song about coming out, "Metamorphosis". Pet Shop Boys have performed and worked with many artists considered to be gay and bisexual icons such as Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Dusty Springfield, Boy George, Kylie Minogue and Madonna. Pet Shop Boys attempted to organise and perform in a planned 2001 tour of out gay musicians, entitled 'Wotapalava'.

Influence

As of 2003, Pet Shop Boys were ranked by Billboard's Joel Whitburn (in his book Billboard's Hot Dance/Disco 1974-2003) as the fourth most successful act on the U.S. Dance/Club Play charts, behind only Madonna, Janet Jackson and Donna Summer.

In October 2005, a Swedish tribute band called West End Girls had a number-three hit single in their home country with a cover version of "Domino dancing". In January 2006 they released their version of "West End Girls", and an album was released in June. Pet Shop Boys also have several tribute bands in the form of Birmingham-based Pet Shop Noise who have been performing locally for many years, and Seattle-based West End Boys.

Madonna's album Confessions on a Dance Floor, released November 2005, includes a track called "Jump" which has close similarities to "West End Girls".[citation needed] An interview at Popjustice with Stuart Price, who produced Madonna's album, revealed the track "Jump" was a complete Chris Lowe inspiration. Apparently, while recording the album, Madonna blurted out at one point, "Pet Shop Boys! I fucking love them!" Pet Shop Boys remixed "Sorry", the second single from the album. The history between Madonna and Pet Shop Boys goes back to 1988 with the song "Heart". Later, in 1991, Madonna was referenced in a tongue-in-cheek lyric in the song "DJ Culture," right after Madonna and Sean Penn had divorced. Tennant refers to the 'reinvention' Madonna was going through at the time.
Actor David Tennant, currently the star of Doctor Who, took his stage name from Neil Tennant.]

Pet Store Puppy

Introduction

Holiday shopping looms and pet stores are ready with a supply of puppies. The puppies are playful, have quick tongues that lavish kisses on happy faces, and are AKC registered.

The customer is reluctant to put that squirmy, loving puppy back into that tiny display cage with the wire bottom.

So the puppy goes home with the happy family. Although many people get good pets from pet stores, chances are that the puppy will have one or more problems caused by poor breeding practices and the pet store will have no answers for customers seeking to solve those problems.

The source of pet store puppies

Pet stores have been accused of getting their puppies from puppy mills, but this is not true of reputable independent or chain stores. Commercial kennels often produce many breeds of dogs. Missouri, known as a "puppy mill state," has more licensed USDA kennels and brokers than any other state. Brokers advertise for puppies. They promise top prices, breeder programs, breeder appreciation events, veterinary exams, breeder education, loyalty, courtesy, and careful transportation to entice breeders into the fold. The puppies are a commodity to them.

Chances are slim that puppies from these sources come from dogs that have been tested for the genetic diseases common to their breeds. The breeders are also unlikely to either know or care about the breed standard, that set of guidelines that describes each breed and maintains its integrity; to carefully choose breeding stock for sound temperament; to use AKC's limited registration and require sterilization of pet quality puppies; or to consider the reproductive health of their dogs when making breeding decisions.

Some pet stores buy puppies locally from breeders who produce a few litters from one or more breeds each year. These people supplement their income by selling puppies and are spared the difficulties of interviewing prospective buyers or keeping unsold puppies. In all likelihood, these breeders do not test for genetic diseases, place no limits on puppy registrations, have a marginal health program, know little about the breed standard, and have poor quality breeding stock.

Pet quality puppies

Many customers look for a pet in a pet shop because "I'm looking for a family pet, not a show dog." They buy a pretty puppy that doesn't meet the breed standard in some way, and base their impressions of the breed on an animal that may be over or under-sized, have a poor temperament or crazy behavior patterns, or exhibit one or more physical attributes that violate the breed standard. Often, these dogs are not spayed or neutered, and they wind up producing puppies that are even further from the standard.
Today we have Labrador Retrievers with legs that belong on Great Danes; American Eskimos that look like Samoyeds with snipy heads; light-boned Akitas; Shetland Sheepdogs as big as Collies; Dalmatians and Airedales with screwy personalities; aggressive Old English Sheepdogs; neurotic Poodles; unsocialized Chow Chows; and dysplastic dogs of all breeds sold in pet stores. The buyer cannot visit the facility that produced the puppies and talk to the breeder; ask about genetic clearances, parent-dog temperaments, or breed characteristics; see the quality of adult dogs produced by the kennel; be reimbursed if the dog develops a genetic disease two or three years down the road; get help with training or behavior problems; ask for local references to contact about previous puppy sales; be assured that someone feels responsible for bringing that particular puppy into the world and will take it back if the family falls on hard times.

Natural Flea Remedies – Natural methods of fighting flea infestations on your pet and in your home include:

1. Ensure that you pet is eating a healthy and complete diet. A healthy pet is naturally better prepared to fight off parasitic infestations.

2. A well groomed pet is also a fantastic natural barrier to fleas and other pests. When a pet is well groomed, their body’s inherent pest fighting oils will be in full force.

3. Feeding your pet garlic can help repel fleas. Garlic has many fantastic properties that well suit it for this kind of use, and it will increase your pets well being at the same time. A ½ teaspoon for small dogs and 1 teaspoon for larger ones of garlic powder sprinkled over their favorite food should be sufficient.

4. Feeding you pet Brewster’s yeast, as in the beer ingredient, can have a similar effect as Garlic in repelling fleas.

A ½ teaspoon for small dogs and 1 teaspoon for larger ones of Brewster’s yeast sprinkled over their favorite food should be sufficient. You can combine the Brewster’s yeast and garlic powder for a natural double punch.

Natural Tick Remedies – Natural methods of repelling and removing ticks off of your pets include:

1. Sodium borate can also be sprinkled on the carpet to help control ticks.

2. Using slow, steady, and firm traction, pull the tick straight out from the skin. Cleanse the skin with mild soap and water. Place the tick in a jar of alcohol, noting the date, in case of future illness. Tick identification and location of tick infestation will be important.

3. Do NOT use a match or caustic materials to try to smother the tick or get the tick to 'back out'. This doesn't work, and may be causing the tick to regurgitate more saliva (and potential pathogens) into the skin.

Natural Worm Remedies – Most worm and worm-like parasites that infect pets are serious conditions that require the attention of qualified medical personnel. Keeping your pet healthy and well groomed are important factors in the fight against worms. Picking you after any suspected sick animal, especially if you have more than one animal is extremely important.

These methods are good at keeping fleas, ticks and worms at bay, but are mostly preventative measures, that is they are not meant to fight a full on infestation.

If the swarm of insects becomes unmanageable and is leading to an unhealthy situation for you and your pet, please seek professional pest assistance.

Basic Pet Supplies

Before bringing your new dog or cat home, it is a good idea to shop for these basic pet supplies. These are the things any pet owner will need to make the dog or cat comfortable in its new home.

Bowls made for pets do have some advantages. Many have rounded bottoms, and often these are the easiest for pets to eat from, especially if they are eating canned dog or cat food.

Some pet dishes have rubber feet or rings around them to make them "skid-proof", which is also a bonus. The round-bottom design makes the dish tip-proof as well.

When choosing pet bowls, stainless steel or ceramic are preferable to plastic. Plastic can leach toxic chemicals as they age. Plastic also scratches easily and cracks, and soft plastic can be chewed up.

A collar and leash is a necessity for dogs, and an option for cats. Cats can also be taught to walk on a leash if you wish to do so. Identification of some kind should be firmly attached to collars of both dogs and cats. A place for the dog or cat to sleep is nice. Older dogs and cats might benefit from orthopedic bedding. You can buy a premium bed, or make your own from a piece of the foam and an old sheet or blanket.

Cats will often ignore any bed you buy for them and choose their own spot - usually your favorite chair or the middle of your bed. However, there are a number of cat beds available that made for the way cats like to sleep. They provide small, snuggly spaces, or are tent-like, offering a nice place to hide.

Most dogs will benefit from having some toys, and for puppies they are a must. Interactive pet toys allow you to spend "quality time" with your dog or cat while providing the animal with some exercise. These would include balls for dogs and wand-type toys for cats.

Chew toys are essential for puppies. It is not a god idea to give the puppy an old shoe, for example, to chew on, as that would imply that all shoes are puppy chew toys.

Squeaky toys can drive owners crazy, but they are good toys to leave for your dog when you go out. Many dogs enjoy throwing these toys up in the air and then pouncing on them. Just be sure your dog cannot easily chew the toy up and swallow the squeaker. If you are planning on getting a new dog or cat, it is wise to have all the necessary pet supplies on hand before you bring the animal home.

Pets Or Companion

In general, a pet must either be small enough (or easily controlled) for his or her undesirable behavioral tendencies to be negligible, or the animal must be actually domesticable. Examples of the former are such animals as fish (including carnivorous ones such as piranha), chickens, invertebrates or small mammals.

A few animals are sufficiently capable of adapting to human interaction to be considered domesticable. Dogs ("man's best friend") are considered to be a classic example of domesticated animals normally suited to being pets. Behaviorally speaking, characteristic changes in dogs due to domestication include a prolonged infancy, increased playfulness, and increased barking. Wolves are far less playful and vocal.

Many rodents—such as fancy rats, fancy mice, and Syrian hamsters—are commonly kept as household pets. Such animals as reptiles are typically considered exotic pets. This may change in the future, as 'exotic' pet ownership is increasing rapidly. Some of these animals, such as green iguanas, large monitor lizards, and large birds, do not make suitable pets for the average person, as they require extensive housing and diet. They can also become quite aggressive if not regularly handled. Exotic mammals are also becoming increasingly more popular as pets. For example, the domesticated hedgehog has been selectively bred to the point where its physical characteristics no longer directly match its wild European and African counterparts.[citation needed] One reads occasional reports in People and other magazines of individuals who have run into legal trouble for keeping large exotic pets, both in rural estates and urban apartments.

A few years ago, New York Police Department officers arrested a man who had kept large cats and an alligator in a small Manhattan apartment. Many animal species are difficult to handle and cannot be pets for the general populace. Large cats cannot become pets, as they do not reliably restrain their impulses (although cheetahs are an exception and have been kept as pets in the past). Nor do the large bears, for similar reasons. Several of the ferret and otter varieties can be human companions. See also pet adoption. Because of environmental and public safety concerns, some pets are illegal in many areas.

The most popular pets are noted for their loyal or playful characteristics, for their attractive appearance, or for their song. Pets also generally seem to provide their owners with non-trivial health benefits; keeping pets has been shown to help relieve stress. There is now a medically-approved class of "therapy animals," mostly dogs, who are brought to visit confined humans. Walking a dog can provide both the owner and the dog with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction.

Koko the gorilla is one of few examples of a non-human animal which has had an explicit pet. While in theory any animal might be a pet, in practice only a small number of species of mammals (especially dogs and cats) and other small animals, such as birds, fish, or lizards, are practical. One reason for this is that large animals are not able to fit inside small dwellings.
